So stoked to have this in stock! Great collection of stories from the Hawaiian underground - Punk, Ska, Metal and more! If you think the only music out of Hawaii is Don Ho, Arthur Lyman, Martin Denny, Gabby Pahinui or Brother Iz, check out what else has been going on in the underground - from hard rock, psych, punk, ska, pop punk, reggae, new wave and more.

I've read a ton of oral histories of music scenes and this is up there with the best... mindblowing stuff expertly assembled by Shawn Lopes. SERIOUSLY! Eric O is in this thing with his high school band Exactones and also as they turned into The Dambuilders.. You also might know pre-Poi Dog Pondering Frank Orrall in just about every band in the book but especially the SQUIDS and HAT MAKES THE MAN. Maybe you've heard hard rockers Hawaii or Sacred RIte or pop punkers J-Church or Grapefruit or nosie-rockers Chokebore who ended up on Amphetamine Reptile in the 90s. But there's tons more. Great stuff on all the venues that would pop up and then disappear under a cloud of drugs and misbehavior. .

If you wanna check out the other bands featured- a good starting place is The Hawaiian Punk Rock Musuem- before this book, the only place to learn about most of these bands. Bonus: Site sports a proud geocities-style layout!

Anyway, if you're into these kinds of scene histories and can't imagine what a Hawaiian punk scene might look like, you should get this book!

OFFICIAL BLURB

When Honolulu police were summoned to a Waikiki penthouse early one February morning in 1980, they discovered signs of a brutal attack on the lifeless, unclothed body of a local nightclub owner. As news rippled through the city, a crucial chain of events kicked off, ultimately uniting a disordered muddle of young punks, castoffs, and firebrands in the name of radical rock and roll. Local Unrest is the real-life story of a most unusual, colorful, and dynamic underground music scene almost completely unknown to the outside world.

Through the candid, eye-opening accounts of the offbeat nightlifers who built Hawaii’s rambunctious punk, post-punk, and alternative rock communities, former music journalist Shawn “Speedy” Lopes takes us on a fascinating deep dive into the most isolated and overlooked music scene in America.
