Don Lifted - 325i
New from the alter-ego of Lawrence Matthews, Memphis multi-discipline artist extraordinaire!
Following two genre blending independent projects based around the obsessive qualities of love in his youth, Don Lifted's label debut 325i finds the artist physically stuck but mentally, emotionally and romantically expanding. Written and recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic the album explores the artist's navigation of his future, romantic and physical; as well as their anxieties surrounding, isolation, queerness and past traumas. The album represents transition not only artistically but in the embracing of an identity suppressed by an outside world he can no longer touch.
"The ten songs here sound painfully lonely, whether he's trying to articulate unrequited love or obliquely referencing the protests that swept the country last year. Just about every album released in 2021 has been a product of the pandemic in some sense, but few seem to have been shaped by it so thoroughly, and fewer still capture the feeling of locked-down anxiety, dejection, and intimacy so viscerally." - The Fader, Oct 2021
