____________

Ranking Barnabas, born Stanley Bryan in Kingston in 1960, was an unsung hero of Jamaican dub. A fixture at the legendary Channel One Studios during the genre’s golden era, Barnabas was a versatile engineer, drummer, and deejay, contributing to countless recordings while creating dubs for singles and B-sides, often without credit. His sole album, The Cold Crusher, was originally released in a limited US pressing and quickly became a sought-after rarity.

Now, Italian label Jamdung has revived this lost classic with a carefully restored reissue, featuring artwork inspired by the original, remastering by Berlin’s Dubplates & Mastering, and new liner notes by dub historian Helmut Philipps and reggae authors David Katz. Barnabas passed away on August 18, 2025, at the age of 65, while the reissue was in production. The Cold Crusher now stands as a lasting musical legacy of one of Jamaican dub’s overlooked pioneers.
