Merge will be reissuing the first two records by New Zealand legends The Clean on November 12th, 2021. The band's 1981 debut single "Tally Ho" b/w "Platypus" & first EP Boodle Boodle Boodle have been remastered under the band's supervision by longtime Flying Nun colleague Tex Houston (Look Blue Go Purple, The 3Ds), with the end result being described by David Kilgour as coming out "the way we always intended it.... better than it ever sounded". The band have also overseen the careful re-creation of the the original packaging for both records, which included an insert (Tally Ho 7") and 16-page comic zine (Boodle Boodle Boodle) drawn by fellow Kiwi icon Chris Knox (also of Tall Dwarfs & Toy Love fame).

The influence of The Clean cannot be understated when it comes to the last 40 years of independent pop music. The trio of David Kilgour, Hamish Kilgour & Robert Scott (later of the Bats) basked in the spirit & melody of 60s pop/psychedelia without ever letting go of the perfectly imperfect DIY energy of the 80s post-punk era. Their mix of grit, melody & experimentation would help develop a blueprint for an indie rock sound later expounded upon by bands as varied as Yo La Tengo, Pavement, Superchunk, Jay Reatard, Galaxie 500, etc.

There's arguably two versions of the band, who initially broke up in 1982 before reuniting for a decades-long run starting in the late 80s. These two reissues come from the first iteration of the band, a scrappier, lo-fi affair still buzzing from the fury of first generation of New Zealand punk acts like The Enemy & a cousin-in-spirit to the music UK acts like Television Personalities & The Pastels. Their first single "Tally Ho!" was an instant hit, making it onto the top 20 charts in New Zealand (the first hit for Flying Nun) & remains a classic piece of New Zealand pop. Boodle Boodle Boodle, their 5-song follow-up EP includes some of their best known songs in "Anything Could Happen" and "Point That Thing Somewhere Else"
