Anyone who has seen his movies can attest to the fact that Mike McCarthy always overdelivers. Sore Losers is as good \/ bad an example as any. Whole soundtracks would be filled out around just one of the acts on this thing—case in point, Greg Oblivian doing a toy instrument version of the much-loved “Bad Man” that is worth the price of the record by itself. Plus The Gories \/ Dirtbombs’ Mick Collins, The Makers, Jack Oblivian himself, and the mighty Guitar Wolf! Also New Orleans garage\/ frat kings Royal Pendletons, Jeffrey Evans of the Gibson Bros with his ’68 Comeback, and also featuring Jack Taylor, the most amazing \/ fucked up guitar player ever. His guitar tone started with the legendarily messed-up solo in the Velvet Underground’s “I Heard Her Call My Name” and then added four fuzz pedals to it, creating modern art! RIP Jack Taylor. There is also Nick Diablo of Viva L’American Death Ray Music, The Drags, The Makers, Tim Feleppa, Gasoline… This is quality ’90s garage rock, still raw and vital as ever. This rerelease coincides with McCarthy’s new edit of the film. All very brief (many of them clocking in at under 2 minutes ), the songs here are ultra-economic distillations on a limited number of themes (of independence and freedom to move and to grow, “that love is changeable, that you cannot pin anything or anyone down in this world - and if you try it mostly won't work.”). The melodies seem timelessly sweet and addictive. The vision at once delicate but somehow tough as granite. There’s nothing extraneous, no drawn-out lingering over a lyrical theme or a melody. Discovered via an industry friend by Rolling Stones manager\/guru Andrew Loog Oldham, who gave her a Jagger\/Richards song, (‘Some Things…’) Vashti was put in the studio to record the song accompanied by a full orchestra. The B side was her own ‘I Want To Be Alone’ and released as her debut single on the Decca label in May 1965. Despite a whirlwind of promotion, the single flopped and Vashti left to pursue more pared-down ambitions, recording ‘Train Song’\/‘Love Song’ for Columbia, with just voice, guitar and cello. Again foundering with no publicity upon its release in June 1966, Vashti left again, this time returning to Andrew Oldham and the Immediate label he had just started. Four of these songs were then run out to a 7” acetate (since lost\/destroyed) which would serve as her demo. These were the first recordings Vashti had ever made of the songs she had written aged eighteen and nineteen. Considering they sat gathering dust in a shed and then in an attic for nearly forty years, the tapes are amazingly well preserved, and after baking reveal a stunning set of raw, pure, intimate recordings. Lavender, Quintron, Robert Turman, and John Wiese, I presented a 6 hour performance of ROZART MIX at John Cage Trust. Six hours of 12 individually amplified reel to reel tape machines, placed around multiple floors of a house, playing 88 tape loops spliced together by 5 to 175 splices, created an overwhelming and joyous environment of cacophonous sound. The performance culminated with John Wiese touching a frog for the first time as the final sound croaked through the speakers. This infectious bonehead cruncher features future Beat Farmer Jerry Raney and the original rhythm section of Iron Butterfly in bassist Greg Willis and drummer Jack Pinney. Glory is what they got up to after their former bandmates left for L.A.’s garden of Eden.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“Jack the Ripper” is a mercilessly bootlegged Cleveland classic from 1978 with a serrated punk edge and vocals that recall Mick Blood of Aussie savages the Lime Spiders. Heavy riff with power chord stalks beneath as one takes their advice… get loose and blow up the past.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSmokin’ Buku Band dropped Riding Easy’s jaw with the audacious track “Hot Love,” coming on like some fractured fever dream burlesque of Led Zep, moves out of Hollywood in 1980. Swooping elongated vocals above, a total Zep chord move at the end of each verse. Writer \/ producer Steve Shauger aka Shag Stevens gets a brilliantly messed up sound quality here, the ideal polar opposite of slick. The extended guitar break is an epitome of serendipitously crude virtuosity, simply outrageous!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNothing better than an angry two chord guitar attack with cowbell to set the stage for this rant about getting “Ripped Off” by love. Taken from their rare 1977 LP on Dynamite Records, Chicago Triangle was Marvey Esparza, Dave Guereca, Jose “Tarr” Perez and Robert Aguilera. They unleash such strong brain-scrubbing wah wah frenzy in the guitar break here that it seems to perversely mock it’s own intensity! Lyrics like “I can see things inside your brain” and “I can see things I can’t touch... give it to me!”... totally bypass romance, this is cut-to-the-chase girl grabber action with the cocky attitude only a young dude fresh on the hunt can get away with. To top it off the guitar break has full on echoey psychedelic Jimi moves.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBLIZZARD “Be Myself” out of Oklahoma City 1974 makes the case for toughening up attitudes towards society, how I live is “not yours to decide”... I’m gonna be myself, fuck off if you can’t dig that. Backup vocals repeating the title create a mega hook perfectly offset by the gnarly guitar attacks. One of the key elements here is the drumming, not merely keeping the beat, flying all over the place like another lead instrument kicking ass in a street fight!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFOX “Sun City - Part II” on the Studio 10 label out of San Francisco in 1969 is same year and label as the Day Blindness LP, both led by guitar\/vocalist Gary Pihl. The vibe of the LP is surpassed here, stripped down to a two chord fried power trio stalker, in your face vocals, primitive guitar break with an arrogant abrasive tone. Gary later found fame joining the classic rock band Boston... this crude toxic burner is as far removed from that highly produced radio friendly sound as imaginable... it goes straight for the throat!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSWEET WINE “Bringing Me Back Home” expands the action here backwards into time. Bluesy boogie shuffle rock, on the road but needing to get back home to his woman. Issued in 1970 in Virginia, Minnesota, bands like this were sprouting up everywhere at the time like some secret ‘invasion of the body snatchers’ style plot to bring rock out of the pipe dreams of psychedelia and back home to hot ladies and booze.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eENOCH SMOKEY “Roll Over Beethoven” closes out side one with another dose of raw roots inflected rocking. They change it up in light of the times, 1969 out of Iowa City on Pumpkin Seed Records. The structure is retooled, adding a cool descending chord section to the break, lead guitar ripping it up throughout with wicked hard rock overkill instead of the usual Chuck Berry moves.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSIDE TWO:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFLIGHT “Get You” is a ludicrously cool come on song, vocals ridiculously to the point, guitars crunching it up.
